Wealth or God?
Mark 8:36-37
"For what profit is there for someone who gains everything in the world, but loses his own soul?
For what will a person give in exchange for his soul?"
Someone could have all the wealth and power the world could offer, but what then? When they are dying, what would they give to live forever? What if someone said to them, "You can live healthy, strong and happily forever, but you must give me all you have."
What would the billionaire say? Wouldn't he say yes? Isn't a good life worth everything?
Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."
One of these two things must be chosen by everyone. Money or God, who will we serve? The Bible tells us to give, share, lend and help people in need. If we put money first, will we do these things? Probably not. If we put God first, will we do these things? Probably. That is the difference between loving God and money. It isn't that he wants us to be poor or not have anything nice. He wants our first priority to be helping others. And if we do, he says not to worry about our lives.
"For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body as to what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?"
