The Bible
Jesus said, "You search the scriptures, because you believe that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me. Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life." John 5:39-40
The men Jesus was talking to were experts on the Old Testament. They were the scribes, Saducees and Pharisees. They seemed to think that by obeying the letter of the laws, they would be saved. Jesus told them this was not true. In concentrating on the rules they had missed out on the intent of God.
"You are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law - justice, mercy and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things." Matthew 23:23
We must all be careful of doing this. We should do what Jesus said and lift up justice, mercy and faith. Jesus also said that love was the greatest commandment. As we read the Bible, let us remember that.
